No, you did not read that wrong. There is a chicken wandering Glendale Community College’s campus. This is clearly serious news. So serious, in fact, that KABC did an entire report on it. Apparently, “the fast moving chicken has also frustrated all efforts by animal control to capture it.”
See the exciting video here.

If you are a student at the University of Rhode Island and you live in a home that’s no stranger to loud, late night parties, you probably have a large yellow sticker on the front of house. These stickers are placed on homes found to be disrupting the neighborhood in the hopes that the stigma of being IDed as a nuisance will limit partying.
Unfortunately for the students of the University of Rhode Island, it looks like this practice is here to stay for a while longer at least — U.S. District Judge William E. Smith ruled on Friday that it was constitutional.

It’s not quite higher-ed news, but it is something I thought you’d find interesting: According to a recent Pew study, one in five women now earn more than their husbands.
Women, overall, now earn about 71 percent what men earn — a man’s average salary in 2007 was $46,000 while a women’s was $33,000, according to the Washington Post. To compare: In 1970, women’s salaries were 52 percent that of men.
This news comes as no surprise to me. When I look around at my Penn peers, I see more and more women excelling in academics and in leadership positions. I suspect many of my female peers will one day make more than their husbands. Hopefully, the social stigma of men earning less than their wives will fade as the income gap closes.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Philadelphia may one day have its own state university campus.
Pennsylvania higher education officials are currently in talks with Mayor Nutter’s office to try and provide a more affordable, four-year option for students inside the City of Brotherly Love — a city full of private universities where tuition comes in at over $20,000. (According to the Inquirer, average state tuition is $7,325.)
In a city were many adolescents can’t afford the costs of a private university or the costs of leaving home, a state university inside the city would be a welcome addition. Currently, the only real low-cost option inside the city are two year community colleges. This campus would have enormous potential to increase college enrollment for young Philadelphians. We at TRC hope to see the project move forward.
Note: Temple University is a public university inside Philadelphia. However, tuition at Temple comes in at over $11,000 per year for in-state students, a much higher tuition than its state school peers.

Like most of America, I watched the new George Clooney movie, “Up in the Air,” bewildered that someone could live their life in airports and hotels. For Clooney’s character, the bad airport sushi, the stale air and the disgruntled airline employees are all “reminders that [he is] home.” For me, these are reminders that I am stuck in travel limbo for the next few hours.
I dislike flying and I minimize my time “up in the air” whenever I can. I am thankful, of course, that airplanes and airlines exist. I don’t get nervous in turbulence or take offs. And I love travel and seeing different places. But all the waiting that flying entails makes me fidgety (for lack of a better word).

Green is the new black.
Everything, it turns out, is better in green. Eco-friendly plastic cups. LEED certified buildings. Water that’s not from a bottle. As a Portlander, this obviously makes me happy.
So schools have tapped into this love of all things green. Students, apparently, are digging it — they’re filling up the classroom seats as schools add green classes, programs, majors and minors.

You’ve probably noticed that we started to come back just after Thanksgiving and then disappeared again. Between the work of running The Daily Pennsylvanian and getting ourselves in gear for finals and term papers, we’ve sorely neglected The Report Card. Since we last posted, however, the DP elected a new board of editors, who will official take over in the spring. That means, once our finals are over, we’ll be giving more TLC to TRC than ever before.
Until then, though, good luck on your finals. And, if you go to school in the mid-Atlantic region, good luck getting home for the holidays.

Lincoln University — located in Philadelphia — is now requiring overweight students to take a fitness course in order to graduate. Both students and legal experts are skeptical to say the least.
“We know we’re in the midst of an obesity epidemic,” James L. DeBoy, chairman of Lincoln’s department of health, physical education and recreation, told USA Today. “We have an obligation to address this head on, knowing full well there’s going to be some fallout.”

I don’t get it. First, the University of Florida writes Zombie emergency procedures into an official document. Then, Zombies “attacked” the University of Florida. And now, two community colleges in Illinois — Elgin Community College and Harper College — are using them to promote their schools. What’s with all the Zombies?
Check out the video — it’s all about breaking from from the mindset of average college goers and not being a Zombie (apparently, Zombies pay a lot for college).

Last year’s data shows that college enrollment has hit an all time high in the Unites States — in October of last year, just under 40 percent of Americans aged 18 to 24 were enrolled in a college (either two year or four). The increase is mostly due to an increase in enrollment at community colleges across the country.
The numbers are unsurprising — with unemployment numbers higher than we’ve seen as a while, people are running away from the job market and going to school (both to delay the job search and prepare for it).
