As we reported last week, The University of California system increased tuition by 32 percent to make up for a large gap in the budget. Student response to the decision has been overwhelming.
41 Berkeley students were arrested for refusing to end a daylong occupation of a University classroom on Friday. According the LA Times: “The arrests ended a day of tumult that began before dawn when the students took over classrooms on the second floor and locked four exits. They unfurled a banner that read ‘32 Percent Hike, 900 Layoffs.’”
The protest is by no means isolated to UC Berkeley. UC Santa Cruz has had a very similar Monday, though no arrests have been reported.
Whether or not you agree with the decisions made by the UC Regents, you gotta respect students for taking an active role in their school system. There’s no calling these students apathetic.
