24 Hours Later

Neil Fanaroff

I just got back from men's basketball practice today at Weightmann Gym, where members of the media talked with interim head coach Jerome Allen and captains Zack Rosen and Darren Smith before the actual practice started. Unfortunately I have a project due in 24 hours, but I'll give my initial thoughts from what they said now and hopefully I can get a complete article up later If there are any specific questions you want answered, indicate so in the comments and I'll let you know if they were addressed at practice.

First of all, the mood did not seem somber or down. Players were laughing and joking just like any other day. When we asked Rosen and Smith about the mood of the team as compared to last week, they both said that while nobody is happy about what happened to former head coach Glen Miller, everyone's excited for change and to see what the team can do under Allen.

Read below the jump for more of my thoughts.

Andreas Schreiber out

Zach Klitzman

Andreas Schreiber missed all but two games last year as he suffered from a separated shoulder injury.

It appears he'll miss even more time.

Multiple sources have confirmed that the Swedish forward/center has re-injured his shoulder and will be out indefinitely. He's started both games so far this year yet only averages 5.0 points and one rebound per game. He technically is a senior, but has junior eligibility due to the injuries.

Bernardini: Man On Crutches

Neil Fanaroff

I just got back from Alpha Chi Omega's BMOC (Big Man On Campus) philanthropy event at The Trocadero downtown. It's somewhat of a pageant, in which a number of campus big-shots (in both junior and senior divisions) get to show off some talent in the hopes of winning the title of BMOC. But the biggest news of the night? Tyler Bernardini - competing for the title of Junior BMOC - came out to perform his act with a noticeable limp (I wasn't quite sure what the performance was, but it involved him rapping and being angry, I think). And then during the dance portion for the juniors, Bernardini was on crutches.

He suffered an apparent foot injury against Villanova Monday and coach Glen Miller said he was to receive an MRI Tuesday. So seeing him on crutches does not bode well for the Quakers moving forward.

Garton hurt — again

Zach Klitzman

(Ed Note: I spotted Keiffer Garton the other day in Annenberg on crutches. So I asked Staff Writer Eli Cohen to follow up at practice. Here's what Eli got).

Last Saturday against Columbia, junior quarterback Keiffer Garton -- who had missed the previous two games with an elbow injury -- rebounded from a two-interception first half to throw two touchdowns and lead Penn to a decisive 27-13 victory.

Coaches as well as spectators were curious as to whether or not Garton would be able to play like he did in the second half when Yale comes to Franklin Field Saturday.

Now, coach Al Bagnoli and the Quakers won't have to worry about how Garton will perform against the Bulldogs.

Because Garton won't be playing.

The Castle Rock, Colo., native sustained a knee sprain during Tuesday's practice, and was heavily bandaged and on crutches by the next day.

Bagnoli is not optimistic about Garton's chances of playing soon, and doesn't really know what to expect.

For the time being, however, senior Kyle Olson, who Bagnoli claims is 100 percent healthy and ready to go after recovering from his own knee injury, will start for the Quakers as they try to continue their three-game winning streak.

Ragone out for season

Noah Rosenstein

Freshman QB Billy Ragone had a blessing in disguise turn into a disaster. With regular starter Keiffer Garton sidelined with an elbow injury, Ragone saw extensive playing time Saturday against Dartmouth. But in the third quarter Ragone tried a quarterback keeper on third down and six, and came up injured on the play.

We learned later that he went down with a broken collarbone, and I just confirmed that he'll be done for the year with the injury.

He had been playing well, and earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors for his performance before the season-ending blow. He scrambled for a touchdown from three yards out in the first quarter and set up Penn's second touchdown of the day with a 33-yard run. He totalled 62 yards rushing on nine carries (6.2 per attempt) and went 3-for-3 through the air.

With Olson and Garton also banged up, Penn might have to turn to sophomore John Hurley for some snaps next week against Bucknell. Freshman Andrew Holland might also get a chance. For all the preseason hype about a more versatile offense with mobile quarterbacks, one has to question whether the injuries to Garton and Ragone should cause Al Bagnoli to re-think things. He's said he would limit their running attempts to prevent injuries like this, so has it been bad management or just bad luck? Either way, I'm sure he's thankful he's got a non-conference game coming up to test out the two young arms.

Schreiber’s status

Andrew Scurria

Junior forward Andreas Schreiber was just one of many players who could have made a difference for Penn this past season had he been healthy. Now it looks like he might have two more years to make his mark.

In an interview with philly.com this week, coach Glen Miller said that the surgery to correct Schreiber's torn labrum had gone off without a hitch, that he was progressing well and that he has already started the process of petitioning for a fifth season of eligibility, which he could get since he played in fewer than one-fifth of Penn's games this past season.

At 6-foot-9 and 245 pounds, Schreiber is the most imposing of the Quakers' frontcourt options and the most important off-season rehab to keep an eye on outside of Darren Smith.

McMahon leaves team; Schreiber, Smith out for season

Krista Hutz

ORLANDO, Fla., -- After the Central Florida game, Glen Miller confirmed that senior Tommy McMahon is no longer on the team. Miller also said that sophomores Andreas Schreiber, suffering from a shoulder injury, and Darren Smith, out since last season with a broken kneecap, will be out for the remainder of the season and that the status of senior Aron Cohen is still up in the air as he undergoes testing.

On McMahon: "He just had a lot to overcome with his injuries and things and at this point, it was just tough for him to get into a situation where he could help the team."

On Schreiber and Smith: "Schreiber resumed practice and dislocated his shoulder again so he’s going to go ahead and have surgery. Darren Smith … all indications were that he was going to resume practice and get past one final hurdle which was an x-ray ... and Darren felt pretty good, but the x-ray showed that he had taken a step backwards. So he’ll be lost for the rest of the season also."

On Cohen: "Aron Cohen, he’s got a problem with his heart and the tests are ongoing, so we don’t have a conclusive finding yet."

Injury update

Andrew Todres

Here's the latest on Justin Reilly and Darren Smith, from the postgame press conference on Friday.

Glen Miller: "We're anticipating that Darren and maybe Justin will come back sometime during the exam period and resume practice. But I can't count on that and when they come back, they'll have a ways to go before they get themselves, if all goes well, conditioned to be able to help us on the floor."

Hansbrough ‘extremely doubtful’ to face Penn

Zach Klitzman

The Penn basketball team might be facing the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation this Saturday, but at least the chances that they'll face North Carolina's best player are quite slim.

Senior Tyler Hansbrough, who decided to stay in school for his final season instead of declaring for the NBA draft, has been limited due to a stress reaction in his right shin. In fact, he hasn't practiced in two weeks. And according to coach Roy Williams, "It's extremely doubtful that he would play against Pennsylvania, and I emphasize extremely doubtful."

(Hey, at least he didn't call us Penn State.)

The reigning National Player of the Year has 48 points and 15 rebounds in two career games against the Quakers.

The Tar Heels also are without guard Marcus Ginyard, one of their best defenders.

Schreiber has shoulder injury

Andrew Scurria

For those who went to the Red and Blue scrimmage the other day, one absence (among many) was junior forward Andreas Schreiber.

I haven't talked to any of the team's coaches, or Schreiber himself, about this yet, but a source who is very close to the team tells me that he hurt his shoulder in practice diving for a loose ball.

As for the exact nature of the injury, he has heard the terms 'dislocated' and 'separated.' Like my source, I'm not sure there is a difference. As for a return time, who knows, but it is probably a couple of weeks at the least.
