A friend who covers Big 5 basketball forwarded along this media release from Temple Athletics. It speaks for itself.
Date: Thursday, October 6, 2011
Time: 11:15 a.m – Noon
Place: Al Shrier Media Room- the Liacouras Center
Event: Temple University Men’s Basketball Head coach Fran Dunphy will shave his mustache in honor of former player Dionte Christmas’ graduation. It will mark the first time in 40 years (1971) that the Owls’ coach will have a clean upper lip. Dionte Christmas will also be present for the historic shaving.
A historic shaving it will be. For more on the 'stache, see DP Sports alum Dave Zeitlin's write up for CSN Philly.
Silcox - Thank you for the contribution.
If this doesnt speak to the character and quality of Coach Dunphy, I dont know what does. Fran is one of the all-timers in Philadelphia. He is a tremendous coach, but an even better human being. Penn is quite fortunate that he remained with us for so long. He is as classy as they come.
Also, let us not forget that Christmas also held up his end of the bargain. He took the challenge and finished his course work and became a graduate. Kudos to him as well. For what it worth, Christmas finished his degree in an amazingly shorter time (after his eligibility ended) than Jerome Allen took to complete his.
As always, the Zeitlin piece was good too. Thanks @ Calsef for sharing this as well. Zeitlin has really made the Penn Gazette's sports much better than the slop that David Porter was writing for so long. Kudos to Zeitlin!
One final question for Silcox- Was the Source of this nugget the one-and-only (OAO) Jonathan Tannenwald?
