W. Lax ranked sixth in IWLCA preseason poll

Spring has arrived early in Philadelphia and with it, signs of spring sports. The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association released its annual preseason poll and, to nobody's surprise, Penn once again cracked the Top 10.

This year's Quakers — coming off their fourth-straight Ivy championship — were ranked No. 6. in 2011. The top five were Maryland, Northwestern, North Carolina, Duke and Syracuse in that order.

This marks a drop of three spots from last year's preseason poll, in which Penn was ranked third ahead of UNC, Duke and Syracuse. Penn's run in the NCAA tournament last year was ended in the quarterfinals by No. 1 and eventual champion Maryland.

Penn will first see action at home against Drexel next weekend before an early ranked bout with UNC. Six teams on Penn's schedule were ranked in the IWLCA's preseason Top 20.

  1. Loss of an unbelievable senior class probably the main reason for drop in rankings. Not sure how the freshman class looks, but I trust Brower-Corbett

  2. Pumped up!!! You guys better have good lax coverage. haha.

It's going to be tough for the Quakers to replace this past year's senior class with Ali DeLuca, Emily Szelest and Emma Spiro gone. Hopefully their freshman are as good as Corbett says they are.

  3. I'd also attribute the drop in preseason ranking simply to the fact that they didn't go as far in the tournament last season as the year before. A Semi-final appearance corresponds pretty clearly with a ranking in the top 4. A quarterfinal appearance would correlate to top 8.

  4. What, if anything, has been done on the marketing/promotion front to
get this terrific team in the forefront of the Spring sports calendar?

Penn Athletics Website doesnt offer much on this topic-- which is not surprising

  5. Women's lacrosse is the lead piece on the Penn Athletics website right now. In addition, Penn Athletics will also be video streaming all of the womens lacrosse team's home games this year.

  6. Do you know if they'll be streaming them for free, or will it only be part of the PSN package?

  7. What, if anything, has been done to get the students to come to FF
to see the team in action?

Is the RBC engaged and aligned with any such efforts?

What about social media - Facebook and Twitter and 4 Square?

Perhaps other teams can rally around WLAX, the same way Coach Fuller
was able to galvanize the campus during the late season push.

Can one of the DP reporters look into this from a marketing/promotional

  8. Alum -

Is it reasonable to infer that given your interest and knowledge of the Penn Athletics website and its processes, that you are a member of WH? If so, as a matter of interest why don't you post under your name? If it's based on policy, I'll withdraw the question.

On the chance that you may be WH, can you comment on why the website facilities list has broken pages such as Pottruck and Levy links, and the page itself hasn't been updated since '04? Please see what you can do. Thanks in advance.

  9. No - it's not a reasonable assumption on your part. I do subscribe to PSN though and I think the website is either better than or comparable to the websites of other Ivies.

The link to facilities on the website should obviously be updated but I totally disagree that it has even the remotest connection to recruiting success or a lack of funding. It's an oversight on a section of the website that probably very few have ever had occasion to visit. I would doubt even one potential wrestling recruit ever tried to follow that link. PS Rob Eiter is bringing in a very strong recruiting class if you were wondering.

If it bothers you so much, why don't you pick up the phone and call someone at Penn like Alana?

  10. Re website -- The fact that very few people have ever had occasion to visit is secondary to the fact that it is completely outdated.

For an organisation who "prides itself" on being at the forefront of communications and mutlimedia and other forms of technology, they are failing to provide their stakeholders with accuracy and clarity.

The level of effort (LOE) to make the requisite changes are not that tedious.

The army of "work study" students in Mahoney's AC office should be able to handle this task.

  11. Conventional wisdom (CW) says that unless your name is Levy, Shabel, Dunning, Dunsmore, Rockwell, Weiss, or Owens....you need to jump through hoops to get anything done. That inlcudes getting someone to take (and return) a phone call.

Its the culture that the AD has fostered within his organization.

Even loyalist diehards like Howie Gensler are brushed off...

Its the way things get done at 233 South 33d

  12. Alum -

Given your authoritative knowledge and insight of all matters Penn Sports and its website, I'm not sure I buy your denial, but OK. I'm not sure why it requires a phone call on anyone's part to update and fix the self-described top Ivy sports website? I would thing (hope) the self-described top Ivy sports website would as a matter of "Penn Pride" do so without any prompting.

Again, thanks for your prompt response.

  13. Alum -

Admittedly it may not have been clear, but the thanks in my above post was for your previous prompt response. Anything further you'd care to acknowledge would be bonus.

  14. Your personal opinions are of little interest to me, but consider for a moment that it's a real possibilty that the people who manage the website may not be aware of the problem. It's not like this is a feature many would actually try to access and then bring the shortcomings to their attention.

I dropped Alanna a line about those dropdowns. She may need to direct my email to a more appropriate person, so I trust somebody should be made aware of this trivial oversight shortly. We'll see if it gets fixed in a timely manner or if all. I don't know Alanna personally and the only other time I ever communicated with her was to request some information. She responded immediately.

  15. @FOJL: I obviously am not on campus now so I don't know if the RBC has anything planned for this upcoming year. However, I know last year during "Greek Week" there was a major event for the game against Northwestern. Like big barbecue and all. Unfortunately this year the only big game at home on a Saturday is Dartmouth (and I guess UNC but more on that later). So I don't know if they'd plan another event.

Another factor to keep in mind is that few casual fans, whether of W. Lax or Penn Athletics in general, would want to sit out in the cold and watch a game they don't really understand too well. So the first few weeks of the season there's little fan interest. Outside of the weather, the overlap with basketball season also takes away potential fans' interests. So although they start the season with a game against a rival (Drexel) then a game against a national semifinalist from last year (UNC) don't expect anyone really to go to those games, due to weather, basketball season and the fact that Spring Break starts the day before the UNC game.

And Ernie, just because someone knows more about Penn Athletics than yourself, doesn't automatically mean they work for the department.

  16. ZK -

Excellent point! But also be aware I'll readily concede there are many who know more about Penn Athletics than I do. Here's a sample: you, Andrew Todress, FOJL, Rodney, and certainly Alum. And props to all of you. I would point out very respectfully that when 4 of you post, it never has any institutional feel to it.

  17. @Alum

I would like to think that the people responsible for selling promotions/solciting sponsorships would be fully aware that their marketing content on the website is out of date.

If Mike Felici is that blind to this problem, Bilsky should terminate the contract with Nelligan sports ASAP.

If I were a prospective 6-7 figure sponsor for Penn Relays, and I went to the website and found marketing collateral from several years ago and pictures of Glen Miller, I would like to know why.

Or maybe, there are no potential sponsors going to the website?

And then, maybe Bilsky would like to know what exactly Felici/Nelligan is really doing?

  18. Received a very nice note from Alanna over the weekend. The website has been cleaned up as I requested in an email sent to her late last week. She indicated some further changes will be made to the facilities section over the next month to freshen it up a bit.

It's amazing what a reasonable and polite request can accomplish.

  19. My spouse and i were so more than happy when Raymond managed to carry out his researching while using the ideas he made from your own web pages. It is now and again perplexing to just choose to be offering procedures that others might have been making money from. We really grasp we've got the website owner to give thanks to for this. The specific explanations you have made, the easy website menu, the friendships your site aid to engender - it's got many fantastic, and it's really facilitating our son and us know that the issue is exciting, which is exceptionally important. Thank you for all!

  20. Hey there! This is kind of off topic but I need some guidance from an established blog. Is it tough to set up your own blog? I'm not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast. I'm thinking about making my own but I'm not sure where to start. Do you have any tips or suggestions? With thanks

  21. I loved as much as you will receive carried out right here. The sketch is tasteful, your authored subject matter stylish. nonetheless, you command get got an nervousness over that you wish be delivering the following. unwell unquestionably come further formerly again as exactly the same nearly a lot often inside case you shield this hike.

  22. Training I had access to at anytime and I could follow it step by step.
Firstly although you could gain qualifications or learn any business you want,
it is always best to stick with what you know or do something
you already understand, follow something you have a strong
interest in or are already good at. For instance, if you see a lot of purchasing an e-book
on how to combat diabetes; you can use Google Ad - Words tool to find keywords
    associated with the niche.
