Last week I started this new feature of linking to the opposing school’s football stories. Week 1 illustrated the Columbia Spectator’s reaction to Penn’s 27-13 win. This week, let’s see what the Yale Daily News — considered one of the better Ivy newspapers – had to say about Penn’s 9-0 shutout.
The YDN only had one article, a standard recap with a sweet quote from Bulldogs coach Tom Williams, who said “we played with great violence.” (Notice the photo credit). Interesting facts from the recap: though Penn hadn’t shut out an opponent since November 2007, Yale was shut out as recently as the last game of 2008, and in fact didn’t score an offensive touchdown for the second straight week.
There were several comments on the article. Some were vehemently against Williams, who hasn’t thrilled Yalies in his rookie year as coach. But the one defense of him that I especially liked went for the French Revolution metaphor: “Roll the guillotine back into storeage for a bit. … Show Mr. Williams a year of mercy, since the unfortunate truth is that his current minions are all holdovers from the ancien régime.

To Anyone at the DP Listening -
There are technical issues with accessing the DP, particularly today, and FOJL has again reached out for posting assistance:
“Once again, no luck. Can you post as follows to today’s entry:
‘At least there are comments posted on the YDN page. There seems to be little interest and dialogue on our forum here, which is quite unfortunate. I encourage Zach, Noah, Eli and David(Ben) to continue their fine work so that we can get some discourse going here!!!!

How is FOJL having trouble accessing the DP? Like what exactly is the issue. Is the site not loading for him?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
Not sure of his, but several of our PCs received the following message, which we relayed to “Babay” at the DP without any response:
“Unable to connect to database server
If you still have to install Drupal, proceed to the installation page …..”
The layout is definitely smarter looking, but the DP may have inadvertently made itself less user friendly, based on the precipitous drop in user comments and Buzz posts. FOJL’s contrast with the YDN is spot on!

FOJL 2 Tech Message -
“HELP!! It will not take my comment. Please upload this
At times, when I go to “submit comment” - it comes back “empty”.
In other words, it does not post my message and the “leave a reply” box comes back with no content
And at times, I get a similar message to what EN brings up in his post
from 429pm. Obviously there are issues here which are preventing user collaboration!”
Message 2: “And then to compound matters, when i go to repost, i get error saying “Duplicate problem.

How come some comments are not going thru?
And how come others are being rejected as duplicates
when the initial one never goes thru?
I thought you and your IT team had the kinks worked out.

Did you and your team do a Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to
determine what the issue(s) may be?
Thank you Zach!

ZK & DP Tech -
While I’m always interested in FOJL’s comments, and am pleased to facilitate his posts, I’m having trouble accessing the DP this morning and posting. This situation really does have to be fixed pdq! Here’s one of the more modest error messages received before this post took:
“Error establishing a database connection”
Per FOJL: ” I am yet again unable to post this morning. Can you please alert the boys? Whatever was fixed last night, is not a permanent fix.

We’re aware of the database server error and are working on fixing the issue. It’s happened several mornings this week.
Will update when I have more about what’s been happening. Please keep us updated on any problems you have accessing the site.

Update for anyone interested: one of our database settings was incorrect, and that was causing the error messages you saw. We’ve changed that setting, so the problem should be resolved now.

Thanks, Emily.
I’m still seeing a problem on the main buzz page. The page comes up blue and the links on the right side of the page don’t appear. When I open up an article the page looks OK again.
